Can AMD 400 chipset motherboards accommodate Ryzen 5000 processors?

The Ryzen 5000 will be released around November. They are compatible with AMD 500 chipset motherboards. But what about earlier versions such as AMD 400?

AMD 400 chipset motherboards are compatible

MSI has just confirmed via its press release that AMD 400 chipset motherboards will be compatible with these new Ryzen 5000 processors. A Bios update would nevertheless be necessary so that old motherboards can take into account the new processors based on zen3 architecture . The updates will be available from MSI and those who own the 400 series motherboards will be able to use these software upgrades. All cards will be supported by MSI while on AMD's side they only support certain families of this 400 series.

The Ryzen 5000 processors will be on sale from November 5, 20. Their prices vary depending on the range: the Ryzen 5 5600 will cost €315, the Ryzen 7 5800X at €475 and the Ryzen 9 5950X at €850. The manufacturer announces a 25% increase in performance compared to the Zen2 generation. These processors are 7nm standard. We would have to wait for the Zen4 architecture to have CPUs cut at 5nm. For the most efficient in the range: the Ryzen 9 5950X, it has 16 cores and 32 threads. Its nominal clock frequency is 3.4 GHz, reaching a maximum frequency of 4.9 GHz in boost mode. It has 70 MB of cache for a TDP power of 105 Watts. As for the Ryzen 7 5800, it has 8 cores and 16 threads. It has a working frequency of 3.8 GHz and a maximum boost frequency of 4.7 GHz. The latter has 36 MB of cache memory and a TDP power of 105 Watts.

Owners of 400 chipset motherboards can therefore rejoice because they will be able to purchase these new processors without worrying about compatibility. The Bios needs to be updated and that's it.

MSI would produce the necessary updates

MSI has already released Bios updates for the 500 series. Updates for the 400 series will be coming soon. On AMD's side, it will be around January 2021. For the moment, AMD does not plan to provide an update for the AMD 300 series of chipset motherboards so that they can accommodate the Ryzen 5000 series. MSI , for its part has already started to develop a Bios update so that the AMD 300 family can also benefit from these new processors.
