AMD is cooking up the Green Sardine, a new APU

In the Linux Phoronix publication, we spotted an unidentified AMD APU that is said to be called "Green Sardine" or the "Green Sardine".

    A trendy code name

AMD has been using rather bizarre codenames for its products for the past few months. We've seen products with aliases like Navy Flounder, Dimgrey Cavefish, and so on. The recent appearance of Green Sardine suggests that AMD will likely continue this use of codenames for its new processor models.

We noticed a description on one of the patches: "Will be used for Green Sardine, which is a new APU." AMD listed Green Sardine under Renoir. This suggests that Green Sardine could be either a variant or an upgrade for Renoir. It might also be another codename for Lucienne .

    Green Sardine AMD

Rumors suggest that the low-power APUs are a variant or refresh of Ryzen 4000 series chips (codenamed Renoir). Assuming there's a connection between the two, Lucienne could end up with the same formula as Renoir: a 2-core Zen architecture combined with Vega graphics.

The Ryzen 7 5700U , which appeared just over a week ago, is considered one of the first Lucienne APUs. There was little information available about the APU to draw any firm conclusions. The Ryzen 7 5700U is expected to be an octa-core chip with simultaneous multi-threading. This aligns with the maximum configuration of 8 cores and 16 threads on Renoir.

AMD will unveil new Zen 3 processors on October 8th and the Radeon RX 6000 on October 28th. However, the chipmaker has said nothing about its APUs. Given that AMD has begun rolling out support for Green Sardine, we expect these APUs to be released soon.
