AMD concocts the Green Sardine, a new APU

In the Linux publication Phoronix, we spotted an unidentified AMD APU that is reportedly called the "Green Sardine."

    A trendy code name

AMD has been loving putting some pretty weird code names for these products for a few months now. We have experienced products with aliases such as Navy Flounder, Dimgrey Cavefish etc. The recent appearance of Green Sardine implies that AMD will likely continue this use of the codename for its new model processors.

We noticed a description on one of the patches: “Will be used for Green Sardine, which is a new APU.” AMD has listed the Green Sardine under Renoir. Which suggests that the Green Sardine could be either a variation or an upgrade for Renoir. It may be another code name for Lucienne .

The low-power APUs are rumored to be a variant or refresh of Ryzen 4000 series chips (codenamed Renoir). Assuming there is a connection between the two, Lucienne could well end up with the same recipe as Renoir: Zen 2 cores combined with Vega graphics.

The Ryzen 7 5700U , which appeared a little over a week ago, is considered one of the first Lucienne APUs. There was little information on the APU to really draw a conclusion. The Ryzen 7 5700U would be an octa-core chip with simultaneous multi-threading. It therefore complies with the maximum configuration of 8 cores and 16 threads on Renoir.

AMD will unveil new Zen 3 processors on October 8 and the Radeon RX 6000 on October 28. The chipmaker hasn't said anything about its APUs, however. Given that AMD has started rolling out support for Green Sardine, we believe these APUs will be released soon.
