How to install a wireless and wired video intercom?

The video intercom is the ideal security device for monitoring entrances and securing access to your home; it can be wired or wireless, and it allows identification of the person at the door from inside your home without having to move.

A video intercom consists of at least one outdoor door station and a combined monitor (inside) which allows communication with the outside.

Here are the best wired video intercoms that are the easiest to install!

How do I install a wired video intercom?

To install a wired video intercom , you must first start with the wiring.

If you'd like to see things more clearly, here's a video!

The wiring:

The choice of cabling to link the outdoor unit to the indoor monitor depends on the distance between the two components.

  • For a distance of less than 25m, choose a 0.6 mm² cable.
  • If the distance exceeds 25m, cabling with 1.5mm² wires would be necessary.
  • Make 20mm holes in the walls or floor to slide the cables through.
  • Check the polarity when wiring to the monitor: Generally, video intercoms operate on direct current, therefore there are positive and negative wires
  • Connect the positive cable of the indoor monitor to the positive output of the outdoor unit and do the same for the negative wires of each of the two devices to ensure proper operation.
  • Don't forget to put the wires in conduits or trunking to protect them from moisture and insects.

Connect the video intercom to the electrical panel

After connecting the wires from the outdoor unit to the indoor monitor, all you have to do is connect these wires to the modular transformer on your electrical panel.

Installation of the outdoor unit:

After completing the electrical work, the next step is to install the street panel.

  • Choose the location of the control panel which should be about 1.50m from the ground, i.e. at adult eye level so that the visitor outside can be seen on the screen.
  •  Drill holes, insert the wall plugs, and screw them in to fix the outdoor unit to the wall
  • Connect the outdoor unit of the video intercom to the wiring.

It is recommended to apply a silicone sealant to the top and sides of the plate to protect the device from rainwater.

Indoor monitor installation

It's a simple and easy operation.

  • Connect the box to the wiring to the circuit board and to the electrical installation of the dwelling.
  • Choose a wall inside the property
  • Place the base against this wall.
  • Locate the fixing holes, drill, insert the wall plugs into the wall to fix the box.

Once the installation is complete, you should remember to test the device after plugging all the channels.

If you do not feel capable of installing your wired video intercom yourself, choosing a wireless video intercom seems more sensible.

How to install a wireless video intercom?

Installing a wireless wifi video intercom is quick and easy, requiring no electrical work since the device has no wires, as its name suggests.

Before starting the installation, and to avoid any surprises later, choose a location for the two handsets so they are not too far apart . Before purchasing, check that the wireless signal range of the device model meets your needs.

Installation of the outdoor unit

  • Since the device is wireless, you can easily place your video intercom wherever you want.
  •  Drill holes, insert the wall plugs into the wall and screw them in to fix the coat hook to the wall
  • Insert the batteries and place the circuit board.

Don't forget the silicone seal on the top and sides of the hook to protect your wireless video intercom!

Installation of the indoor unit

Depending on the wireless video intercom model purchased, you will have several choices regarding the monitor screen of the wireless video intercom:

  • Fixed monitor, placed on the wall, you must connect it to a power supply outlet
  • This is a mobile monitor; it operates on batteries or a rechargeable battery that will need to be plugged into a power outlet.

How do I connect a video intercom or intercom to an electric gate?

To be able to open an electric gate remotely from your device:

  • The gate or barrier must be equipped with an automatic opening motor, in addition to the electric strike
  • Its automation system must include a dry contact control input (low current) located at the terminal block that receives the current. Check if it has dry contact control inputs.

Before starting the installation, the wiring must first be prepared.

The wiring:

  • Choose a telephone cable whose length depends on the distance between the video intercom and the gate.
  •  Cut two electrical wires to connect the video intercom unit to the gate automation motor using wire cutters.
  • Strip the ends of each wire to facilitate connection.

How do I connect the wires to the street panel?

  • Open the device's circuit board and remove the push button after unscrewing it.
  • Unscrew the turntable from its base using a screwdriver.
  • Locate the terminal block with the wiring on the back of the circuit board.
  • Aim for the G+ and G- terminals
  • Connect one of the two bare electrical wires to the G+ terminal and the other to the G- terminal.
  • Insert the cables into a conduit so that they can be routed to the terminal block of the control inputs of the gate automation.
  • Carefully connect the wires to the gate automation system.

How to connect the wires to the gate automation system

  • Ensure that the opening/closing of the automatic gate by the video intercom is done by dry contact (low current).
  • Verify that the partial opening function is possible between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
  • Use a push button or switch to trigger opening and select automatic closing (H1 or C0).
  • Depending on the voltage available at L1 and L2 of the videophone control, determine the coil voltage of the relay to control the opening through a contact.

All you have to do is operate your electric gate from your indoor screen monitor.

The advantages of a wireless video intercom for individuals

Knowing who's at your door without having to open it is no longer science fiction. Now, you can manage a wireless video intercom with very simple installation. Thanks to its camera and screen, you'll be able to see who's at your door from the comfort of your home. This ingenious system, like all wireless video intercoms, is even more appealing because it requires no construction work for installation. You just need to make sure that the outdoor handset and the indoor unit aren't too far apart to ensure a strong signal. As its name suggests, this type of video intercom works wirelessly: the handset and the indoor unit are connected by radio waves.

Later, from your phone or computer, you'll be able to view live video feeds from the surveillance camera, even miles away. This device is very popular with individuals and is also extremely useful for people with disabilities because, without moving, you can communicate with video and audio. Decisions can be made without needing to go anywhere immediately, allowing you to feel completely safe and secure, with your door locked. If you encounter a stranger, you'll know before you open the door. If you receive a package but are unable to pick it up when the delivery person arrives, you can instruct them to leave it or provide other instructions. It's quick and easy. You can find several models of wireless video intercoms and choose the one you prefer based on the features and prices offered.
