Seagate launches 18TB SkyHawk AI drive for video surveillance

Seagate has announced the launch of the new 18TB SkyHawk AI hard drive dedicated to video surveillance . It is the highest capacity drive provided by Seagate for applications requiring AI-assisted video processing.

A new SkyHawk AI 18 TB model has therefore just been added to the Seagate SkyHawk hard drive range, dedicated to video surveillance applications. This drive is designed to handle multiple audio and video streams. SkyHawk AI uses CMR (Classic Magnetic Recording) technology ImagePerfect firmware . This software ensures a clear HD image and zero frame loss. It allows intensive writing work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week like video surveillance. Different algorithms are in place to make automatic corrections and recover data so that there is no loss. This remains valid even for 64-channel video surveillance. Images are stutter-free thanks to high-speed, on-the-fly automatic error correction.

The advantages with the Seagate SkyHawk AI

The SkyHawk AI range is designed to work with video surveillance systems where analytics are performed using artificial intelligence techniques on recorded videos. Seagate has already announced models in the past in the SkyHawk AI range, but now brings 18TB capacity to this area. This is the case for the 18 TB Exos X18 for the business sector and the 18 TB IronWolf in the NAS sector.

With the 18TB Seagate SkyHawk AI , it is possible to manage up to 64 simultaneous HD video streams . This hard drive can write 550 TB of data per year. That is 3 times higher than that of conventional video surveillance models. The disk can handle a fairly large memory cache thanks to ImagePerfect. Which will help optimize write performance by sequencing the data written to the HDD media. In fact, the movements of the read/write head will be optimized. The ATA-8 Streaming system used allows data to be delivered on time. It prioritizes data transfer timing and not data integrity.

A disc capable of resisting vibrations

ImagePerfect provides robustness to external disturbances using AcuTrac technology . Indeed, under extreme vibration conditions present in a multi-bay monitoring system, any drive in the system must be able to tolerate vibration caused by other drives and the cooling system. Vibration from a neighboring hard drive or fan can negatively impact the performance of individual drives, resulting in degraded overall system performance. Under mild vibration conditions, a standard PC hard drive may simply have degraded performance. However, under extreme vibration conditions, a standard PC drive may suddenly stop working because the servo system cannot lock onto a data track. To manage vibration, rotational vibration (RV) sensors are installed on the Seagate SkyHawk to detect vibrations that may affect servo tracking ability and overall drive performance. RV sensors provide the necessary information to the VCM and PZT microactuator loops and anticipate actions. Which will then eliminate off-track head movements generated by vibrations.

A free data recovery plan is offered with the drive during its 3-year warranty period. The disc is available in the USA for a cost of €435.
