A Reddit enthusiast kbsk1 has just developed software called Renoir Mobile Tuning. The latter allows you to overclock or underclock Ryzen 4000 processors. It has just released the first version RC V 1.0.0 and owners of laptops hosting these processors can customize their operating parameters.
Software to personalize your processor
Enthusiasts are still releasing tuning software for Ryzen. Indeed, ClockTuner has been used by many enthusiasts to modify the parameters of Ryzen 3000 series processors as they wish. So now it is the turn of the 4000 series. Users can use RMT or Renoir Mobile Tuning to overclock or underclock these processors. Overclocking allows you to obtain more performance but the autonomy will decrease as expected. It is notebooks that have these Ryzen 4000 processors while the Ryzen 3000 mainly equips desktop computers. With overclocking, although you will have higher performance, the battery will last less quickly. It's quite logical.
Please note that this software is provided by a third party and not by AMD, the manufacturer of Ryzen processors, nor by the laptop manufacturer. The use of this software is therefore more or less reserved for advanced users. Indeed, it is necessary to take into account the processor utilization factors when boosting the processor: temperature parameters and the limits set by the OEM. So, you should not neglect the cooling parameters so as not to damage the processor and the laptop.
Overclocking or underclocking, RMT does it all
It is entirely possible to underclock the CPU with this tool to get better battery life. We can therefore set the maximum power or temperature. For example, by reducing the working power to 20 Watts, the operating temperature of the processor is around 60°C whereas in normal use with a nominal power of 40 Watts, the processor generally operates at 90°C. Underclocking also reduces the noise emitted by the computer. Indeed, lower operating temperature means less cooling system (fans etc.) running.
The RMT 1.0.0 software is quite complete. It includes a reporting system, allowing you to know and monitor power consumption, clock speed, temperatures, memory speeds, Infinity Fabric as well as GFX and SoC. This software allows you to modify the TDP PL0, PL1 and PL2. It also allows you to customize the duration of power supply boosts (on power supply ) of PL1 and PL2. Thus the PL1/PL2 power defined by default at 37.5W / 48 W can be reduced to 15W / 25 W. In this context, the operating temperature has dropped considerably by 30°C: From 90°C to 60°C . We can also play on the TCTL temperature and the operating power of the TDC and EDC.
From experience, Ryzen-H types are more sensitive to overclocking compared to Ryzen-Us. For underclocking, the 2 types H and U responded favorably to the different settings.
