The PCI-SIG has just completed the PCI Express 6.0 . It is at version 0.7. Test chips enabled the validation of electrical specifications. There will therefore be no more changes and all that remains is to finalize the specifications in 2021.
There will be version 0.9 called “the final project” during which the members of the PCI-SIG consortium will carry out tests in order to adapt the new technology to their patents and intellectual properties. Finally, version 1.0 marks the presentation of the technology to the general public.
What's changing with PCI Express 6.0?
PCI Express 6.0 is twice as fast as PCI Express 5.0. In fact, its speed is 64 Giga Transfers per second per pin instead of 32 GT / s for the previous generation. It should be noted that the throughput of PCIe cards doubles every year. To be able to increase bandwidth, PCI Express version 6.0 uses PAM . It consists of modulating the width of the pulses in 4 levels. This technique is used, among other things, on the GDDR6X memories of the new generation Nvidia GForce 3000 series cards. PCI Express 6.0 uses a new low-latency error correction (FEC) technique to optimize bandwidth.
PCIe 5.0 will become more widely available around 2021-2022. The new PCIe 6.0 version will therefore be widely used by different manufacturers around 2023-2024.
