Seagate has announced the launch of its new 18TB SkyHawk AI hard drive, designed specifically for video surveillance . It is the highest capacity drive Seagate offers for applications requiring AI-assisted video processing.
A new 18TB SkyHawk AI model has just been added to the Seagate SkyHawk hard drive lineup, dedicated to video surveillance applications. This drive is designed to handle multiple audio and video streams. (Classic Magnetic Recording) technology ImagePerfect . This software ensures a clear HD image and zero frame loss. It allows for intensive 24/7 write operations, such as those required for video surveillance. Various algorithms are in place to perform automatic corrections and data recovery to prevent any loss. This remains true even for 64-channel video surveillance. Images are free of stuttering thanks to high-speed, on-the-fly automatic error correction.
The advantages of the Seagate SkyHawk AI
The SkyHawk AI line is designed to work with video surveillance systems that use artificial intelligence to analyze recorded video. Seagate has previously announced models in the SkyHawk AI range, but is now introducing 18TB capacity options. These include the 18TB Exos X18 for the enterprise market and the 18TB IronWolf for the NAS market.

With the 18TB Seagate SkyHawk AI , it's possible to manage up to 64 simultaneous HD video streams . This hard drive allows for 550TB of data writes per year, three times greater than conventional CCTV models. The drive can manage a large memory cache thanks to ImagePerfect, which helps optimize write performance by sequencing the data written to the HDD. This optimizes the read/write head movements. The ATA-8 Streaming system ensures timely data delivery, prioritizing data transfer speed over data integrity.
A disc capable of withstanding vibrations
ImagePerfect provides robustness against external disturbances thanks to AcuTrac technology . In the extreme vibration conditions found in a multi-bay monitoring system, every drive in the system must be able to tolerate vibrations caused by other drives and the cooling system. Vibrations from a nearby hard drive or fan can negatively impact the performance of individual drives, leading to overall system performance degradation. Under mild vibration conditions, a standard PC hard drive may simply experience degraded performance. However, under extreme vibration conditions, a standard PC drive can suddenly fail because the servo system cannot lock onto a data track. To manage vibration, rotational vibration (RV) sensors are installed on the Seagate SkyHawk to detect vibrations that could affect servo tracking and overall drive performance. The RV sensors provide the necessary information to the VCM and PZT micro-actuator loops, allowing for anticipatory actions. This will then eliminate off-track head movements generated by vibrations.
A free data recovery plan is included with the drive during its 3-year warranty period. The drive is available in the USA for €435.
