Chromecast on Google TV is missing a key feature

Chromecast has been a hit with the public since its launch in 2013. It allows users to stream their favorite media directly to their TV from compatible browsers and connected devices. This device also enables non-smart TVs to view videos from the internet.

So what is this missing feature?

The manufacturer forgot to implement the profile selection feature that should have been included in the Google Chromecast . Will we need this feature? The answer is "Yes." This feature is truly essential so that each family member using Chromecast TV can access their preferred settings, media favorites, and so on.

Indeed, not every family member is expected to have their own Google Chromecast. It would have been very useful to have a profile selection option and be able to use the same device for the whole family. It goes without saying that modern devices already have this feature, such as PCs or PS4 consoles. Even multimedia applications like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix offer this option. This allows for personalized favorites and content suggestions for each family member. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences, after all. From a marketing perspective, this feature is significant. Especially since it can lead to targeted marketing offers that are highly effective if they are delivered to the right person and meet their actual needs.

Why the choice of profile?

Each user would, for example, want to easily find their favorite movies or recently viewed content. Meeting these needs isn't easy with the current Chromecast because favorites are a combination of the favorites of the entire family. Favorites are therefore a jumbled collection of favorites from all family members who use the device.

It's surprising that Google has placed a "For you" option at the top of the interface. This tab is supposed to provide a list of recommended movies or TV shows based on the media you've already watched. But this feature becomes pointless when each family member has different preferences and might watch and like content from completely different genres.

Google hasn't learned from the mistakes of others

This lack of functionality was also observed with Google's competitors, such as Amazon. Indeed, with Amazon, the Fire TV is linked to a single Amazon account. Apple, on the other hand, with its newer tvOS allows each user to create their own profile.

Google has taken note of this issue and will do what is necessary to address it, but has not given a specific target date for the availability of this feature, which we consider essential.
