The Radeon RX 580 graphics card was first launched by AMD on April 18, 2017. AMD's partner manufacturer PINE Technology through its XFX division brought its Radeon RX R80 to the market in competition with the cards produced by the other partners. The RX 580 is available online for around €200.
Radeon RX 580 card specifications
The GPU of the Radeon RX 580 has 36 compute units , 32 ROPs , 2304 stream processors and 144 texture units . The 5.7 billion transistors integrated on the 232 mm² chip switch with a base frequency of 1.257 GHz. In boost clock, the GPU manages to reach 1.37 GHz (slightly higher than the OEM at 1.35 GHz). The GPU transfers up to 192.96 GT/s for a maximum performance of 6.2 TFLOPS.
This card is manufactured with the Polaris architecture with the 4th generation of CGN graphics cores. 14-nanometer etching process by Global Foundries. The engraving procedure is better controlled than the previous generation. Optimizations have therefore made it possible to have a higher operating frequency.
On the memory side, the RX 580 card has 8 GB GDDR5 . It transmits data at 8 Gbps on its 256-bit . Which corresponds to a bandwidth of 256 GB/s . The card supports 3 display ports, 1 DVI and 1 HDMI. The XFX Radeon RX 580 card measures 27 x 4 x 12.4 centimeters (L x W x H). In terms of consumption, the card consumes 185 Watts . It is therefore recommended to have a power power supply with more than 500 Watts. The XFX Radeon RX 580 card is equipped with a cooling system with 2 axial fans and has a fairly compact and durable look.
The RX 580 supports a host of features such as AMD Radeon VR Ready Premium, Radeon ReLive, AMD LiquidVR, AMD Target Frame Rate Control (FRTC), AMD App Acceleration , Unified Video Decoder (UVD), Vulkan API, DirectX12, AMD Radeon Software, AMD CrossFire, AMD PowerTune, Radeon Chill, Radeon FreeSync technology, AMD Eyefinity technology, TrueAudio Next, AMD Virtual Super Resolution (VSR)…
Radeon RX 580 card performance
The RX 580 is an improved version of the RX 480 . The two generally have the same characteristics apart from the operating frequency which has improved following the 14 nanometer engraving technique which is better mastered. The card performs quite well in Full HD. It's not really cut out for 4K. The drops in juice and hardware limitations are nevertheless offset by the various software features that accompany the RX 580.
The RX 580 supports AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin which allows you to customize and fine-tune your gaming settings. This application allows you to choose a configuration in 1 click by choosing from 3 modes: Quiet, Balanced and Race.
AMD LiquidVR lets you play with VR headsets with impressive image quality. Combined with AMD Radeon VR Ready Premium , you will enjoy an immersive gaming experience with interactive and intuitive virtual reality.
The AMD App Accelerator allows graphics tasks to be processed quickly because the different calculation tasks are shared efficiently between the CPU and the GPU. Furthermore, with DirectX 12 supported, the machine's different CPU cores can process graphics tasks in parallel. This significantly reduces processing time and eliminates latency.
Radeon FreeSync technology also helps reduce latency to provide smooth images without breakages or stutters.
Efficient and user friendly energy management!
AMD PowerTune allows you to personalize the consumption of your RX 580 card. You can thus limit the TDP for better energy management. You can also have more power when you want more performance.
The Radeon Chill also allows you to benefit from moderate processing power when the image does not require a high frame rate. It therefore allows efficient energy management. On the other hand, when you need more power: in full action, this function automatically adjusts the frame rate.
The RX 580 is user friendly. With A MD Eyefinity technology , you can easily manage a multi-screen environment. Your games can be output on more than 3 screens in parallel in your gaming room. You can also share your gaming highlights with your entire community via Radeon ReLive .
Radeon RX 580 benchmarking
Compared to the R9 380 , we observe a clear increase in frame rates on the different titles tested on the RX 580 card.
On the game Fortnite, the RX 580 allows you to obtain a frame rate of 210 FPS at a resolution of 720p. In high 1080, we have 85 FPS and in QHD, the frame rate drops to 14 FPS.
Compared to the different cards in its category, the RX 580 is positioned between the GeForce GTX Titan and the Radeon R9 390 . In terms of performance, the GeForce GTX Titan is -0.6% behind the RX 580, while the RX 580 is +0.5%.
According to the tests carried out on G3D Mark, the RX 580 obtains a score of 8745. It is above the Radeon RX 470 which has a score of 7927. For information, the Radeon RX 5700 XT is at 16,721 while the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER at 18,115.
On 3DMark, the Radeon RX 580 obtains a score of 4,358. It is neck and neck with the GeForce GTX 980 which obtains a 3DMark score of 4,361.
In short, the Radeon RX 580 is an entry-level card that allows you to play games in Full HD. It differs from the previous generation RX 480 by operating at a higher frequency. Hardware limitations are nevertheless overcome by a whole range of software features. In conclusion, it is worth its price. The RX 580 is available online for around €200.
